Mark, thanks for explaining your thinking on this idea of teaching pronounceable parts. There’s a lot to think about in this long awaited post and I hope you’re open to answering several questions.

I’m sensing echoes of Bloomfield’s Linguistic Method from the 1960s and the use of phonogram patterns. Is this similar?

Can you help me connect your idea of pronounceable parts to what Kearns & Borkenhagen say about phonograms in their 2024 paper, Following Rules in an Unruly Writing System? On page 11 they state, “focusing only or mostly on phonograms is unlikely to provide learners with enough information to make sense of the quasi regular system.” And they suggest that “phonograms may be useful after students build strong sound- spelling knowledge, but not before.”

How does your idea align with David Share’s proposal that students continually refine their knowledge and skills from sub-morphemic to morpho-lexical layers? Learning the basic 1:1 correspondences is pretty straightforward, but how do you envision students grasping the more complex mappings that use multiple letters for a sound or the same spelling for different sounds?

Finally, can you explain what you think is happening in classrooms when you say, “compelling children to become proficient in using this [sound by sound] procedure to read many words is unnecessary”? I’ve read your previous posts and wonder if you’re implying that current phonics instruction is forcing students to remain in the serial decoding phase too long? Are you referring to the practice of having all students participate in a Fundations or UFLI phonics lesson, even those who have cracked the code and are already readers?

I always look forward to a new article by you Mark! This one gives me pause to reflect on foundational understandings that I have.

These recommendations to not build beginner skill in grapheme-by-grapheme blending seem like a sharp left turn from mainstream research advice such as this: https://fcrr.org/sites/g/files/upcbnu2836/files/media/PDFs/What%20Works%20Clearing%20House/wwc_Foundational-Skills-to-Support-Reading-for-Understanding-in-Kindergarten-Through-3rd-Grade_040717.pdf

What are you seeing in that body of work that makes you discount it?
